Easy to spot (but usually when it's too late!), they could be towing a trailer without a tachograph, have no insurance, or even be carrying a vehicle that is too heavy for their trailer or car transporter.

It's been a terrible few weeks on the roads of Britain. Snow and ice have meant that many routes have been blocked or severely congested, causing businesses to suffer as staff fail to make it into work, or customers stay away in favour of a nice warm home.
As you might expect, the weather has also had an adverse effect on car transportation, and many of our customers have suffered delays, or in some cases cancellations.

Car Transport Quoter can meet pretty much all transportation requirements, and that includes covered or enclosed transport. We have a growing number of specialist transport companies who are members of our network, and many who offer single or multi-car enclosed transportation.
Covered or enclosed transporters come in various shapes, sizes and specifications. Some transport companies use a dedicated trailer such as a Brian James Shuttle or a 7.5 tonne transporter which can carry a single, heavy car whereas as an articulated car transport can carry 6 or 7 vehicles at once.
Some operators use curtain sided vehicles. This aids loading by allowing side access whereas hard sided bodies only offer rear entry. The advantages of fully enclosed car transporters means that cars are not visible and are protected from road dirt and grime. Enclosed transporters are ideal for prototype or demonstrator vehicles and concept or pre-launch cars are often moved in enclosed car transporters.
Other common uses of covered vehicle transporters are for track days, new product launches or photo shoots, VIP car deliveries, road shows or motor shows.
A multi car transporter comes in many different configurations. Different rules apply to the shape and size of transporters across Europe.
Often multi-car transporters carry between 9-13 cars depending on the size of the car transporter and and the type of cars and respective size being carried. Some people refer to a multiple car carrier as an 11+. Transporter trailers can last many years and are expensive to purchase. Some have 3 decks, others only have 2 car decks.
A single car transporter can carry one vehicle at a time. The main types of single car transport service are:
- a dedicated single car transporter which has a drivers cab and flat bed deck at the rear
- a towing vehicle (often a 4x4 vehicle) and a purpose built car trailer
There are many different car transporter types such as a Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, Renault Master. Trailers come in all shapes and sizes. Popular brands are Brian James and PRG.
Some single car transporter operators tow a trailer allowing two cars to be carried at once. For this combination the key consideration is the weight of the two vehicles being transported must not exceed the permissible gross vehicle weight of the 'towing vehicle'.
The term gross vehicle weight or GVW is the maximum weight of a towing vehicle plus trailer weight plus the vehicles being carried. This is what the towing vehicle can carry safely on the road. The GVW will be listed in the owner’s manual and is normally shown on a plate or sticker fitted to the vehicle. The plate or sticker may also show a gross train weight (GTW).
Vehicle Transport is a vehicle delivery service provided by one of the following means:
- Tradeplated vehicle delivery service
- Single car transporter vehicle delivery service
- Multi car transporter vehicle delivery service
- Covered car transporter vehicle delivery service

A tachograph is fitted to a car transporter (where required by law) to record hours worked and speed. The idea is to prevent drivers driving for extended hours and having an accident. The Selby rail disaster was caused but a driver falling asleep at teh wheel. VOSA often stop car transporters and check the drivers tachograph hours. VOSA can impound the towing vehicle and the vehicle being carried if the tachograph is not fitted, operated and out of driving hours.
